Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) is an agreement with the Australian government that allows certain Australian businesses to sponsor overseas citizens to work in highly skilled occupations. This agreement once approved, allows the business to nominate the overseas citizen worker for a TSS visa (subclass 482).

To be eligible to sponsor skilled overseas workers for a 482 visa or a 494 visa, your business must either be:

  • a registered business trading in Australia;
  • a business not operating in Australian but planning to set up a business entity in Australia or has a contractual obligation in Australia;
  • a brand new business.
  • a brand new business.

When you receive your approval, your business is now all set to sponsor a skilled worker from overseas for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (482) visa or a 494 visa. It will give your business the ability to  fill skill shortages within the business with skilled workers who cannot be sourced locally.

The various types of entities that would generally apply for SBS approval should fall within one of these five groups of ‘persons’. These include:

  • sole traders;
  • partnerships;
  • proprietary companies;
  • public companies;
  • government departments;
  • statutory authorities;
  • not-for-profit-organisations;

How long is the standard business sponsor status valid for?

Your standard business sponsor status is valid for 5 years on approval.

The government’s fee for the sponsorship application is AUD 420.
